Recording Volume/EQ/Filter/FX Automation in Timeline
in progress
Jonathan Barry
When we add the Midi Support feature, it would be awesome if it allowed us to have any manipulation of the volume faders, EQ & filter knobs, and effects/XY pad recorded into the timeline somehow (to be able to go back and edit just a specific effect, for example, or just a specific knob or fader's manipulation at any given point in the song or on any given track until it's just right, would be bad ass).

I'm so glad this in progress. I look forward to this feature.

Jonathan Barry
Louis any type of timeline on this, even a rough estimate of when it'll be on?
Louis
Jonathan Barry: We're on it as we speak. It should be out early September.
Could you describe precisely how you would be using it, what do you have in mind?

Basically, after recording a set with the app, I would go through the recording and edit imperfections in sound levels (volume of individual tracks/channels, equalizer settings, effects/effects levels).
I often find I have a recording that I like but that has some issue(s) at certain parts of the recording in which the effects maybe were too prominent at certain points but that I would like to be able to keep the section in the recording, only changing the level of an effect at certain points of it or the level of the treble or the bass or mids on a certain loop but not the entire track, or a loop or channel's/track's volume level needs adjustment at some part.
Often when this happens, the only way to try to get what I want is by doing another take entirely, attempting to reproduce the same live set, live again, only by trying to do whatever part I wanted to change, hopefully, more to satisfaction, and if I end up actually being able to fix that part, then that version ends up having a bunch of new issues in other sections that weren't there before.
I think it breaks down to the inability to control multiple things simultaneously during a live set recording, especially when it comes to effects and volume (you can only control what's on the screen when it comes to the touch screen, so being able to do some changes to the levels/effects in a place you weren't able to when playing live would be great). Another example would be wanting to adjust treble, mids, and bass on a certain channel while using effects on a different channel, or maybe wanting to adjust the volume on a channel, fading it out or in while using effects on another channel, maybe wanting effects on 2 different channels at once at certain parts even, while making different equalization changes to the different channels (we wouldn't have enough hands and screens to do this all but being able to edit these things with automation we could do the adjustments needed on individual channels/tracks one at a time and have those changes devices m recorded into the timeline, for example, on channel/track one I adjust volume levels fading in and/or out at certain points while recording in timeline). Then play the entire song over (now with the adjustments in channel/track 1 playing in the revised recording now while you're doing this m similar edits to channel/track 2, then playback again with the edits you just did in track 1 and 2 while making similar edits to channel/track 3, and so forth and so on). To be able to do this with, not only volume levels, but also equalizer levels (treble, bass, and mid levels), and also to be able to do this with effects.

Louis I wish I could explain it better. My hope is to, basically, be able to use the timeline feature/section more practically. At this point, in my opinion, the timeline section isn't very useful because it doesn't record volume levels (main volume level, individual channel volume levels, loop/sample volume levels, no adjustments to any of these volume levels are recorded in the timeline), it doesn't record equalizer levels (adjustments to bass, mids, and trebles on individual channels, these adjustments currently aren't recorded into the timeline), and it doesn't record effects period (it doesn't record effects levels, effects on or off, filter levels on the equalizer settings, the main filter in the effects, nor any effects done on the XY pad in the effects section).
The main reason I would like all these to be recorded in the timeline section would be so that I could go back and edit all of these individual things after listening to a recording I've made. Also to be able to add any of these things to parts that I didn't add them to in the original live recording, and vice versa, to be able to maybe take parts of these things out where I don't like them after listening back to the recording.

Louis Basically to make the timeline section work like a real DAW when it comes to editing music. Currently I can only record loops/samples onto the timeline, and yes I can go back and edit that individual loops and samples to some degree in the timeline, but it's only limited to the length of time the loop/sample plays at this point, which is very limited in my opinion. But to be able to do this very same thing to effects levels and hp/lp filter levels in effects section, as well bass and mids and treble and filter levels (equalizer levels) and volume levels for each channel individually so that all of these levels can be changing at different points in the song (automated) to your liking [
possibly maybe even main volume level, and the volume and filter levels of the individual samples within the sample edit section (like where you can change the quantization for an individual loop vs the global mix)
-- but these last ones I marked the **'s around are very optional, lol; the important things are: within the equalizer section, the volume for each individual channel, as well as each individual channel's bass, mid, treble, filter levels; and within the effects section, any effects recorded, as well as the main hp/lp filter levels recorded (to each individual channel as well)].Louis
Jonathan Barry: Hi, that's exactly what we have as an option for repairing the SONG view which is now quite obsolete with the new Live direction of Remixlive.
The opportunity to edit your recordings : Tracks, Remixes, Sessions, live sets.
Press Record, do your magic, end your record -> A menu pops to let you Edit what you've recorded in a Timeline, full screen view, including the ability to edit all your automations.
You'd be able to also edit ANY of your Recordings by simply taping Edit on the Recordings list and voilà.
What do you think about this UX?
Louis
Step 1 - End of recording menu
Louis
Step 2 - Full view where you can edit any recordings (tracks, remixes, live sets, sessions) including access to Automations
Louis
Step 3 - Recording list where full edition of any of your recording is one tap away

Question 1.: So with this update will we be able to edit equalizer settings, volume settings, filter settings, and fx settings?
Question 2.: Will this involve/incorporate automation?
Louis
Jonathan Barry -
Yes, with this approach, a full spectrum automation is indeed included.
What do you think about it?

Hi, automations are ready, engine side for months, but still waiting more users to request this feature before planning it up.
So, if you feel like it's a must-have for you, go Vote for this ticket :)
Jonathan Barry
Louis: just upvote this post?
Jonathan Barry
Louis: sorry if it's a dumb question, but what does it mean exactly that it's ready "for the engine side"?
Louis
Jonathan Barry: Yes, the more votes from Remixlive users goes for a specific feature request, more likely we'll be implementing it soon.
Jonathan Barry
Louis: awesome, hopefully others will see the importance of this feature being added. It will make editing a finished track much better for everyone!
Jonathan Barry
Louis: 5 votes now! Does that mean it's going to happen now or?
Louis
Jonathan Barry: It might of course, but please consider the latency between a feature request, its validation and approval to the product roadmap, specifications and dev time. It might be coming out Q2 2023 as we've got already a quite heavy fundamental features restructuration planned for Q1 2023.
Louis
Jonathan Barry: Hi Jonathan Barry, it means that we have to consider this feature as one of the top priorities for 2023 indeed.
However, research, specifications, design and development takes often quite some time, expect some inertia between a feature request and its shipping. We're doing our best to deliver at least one significant and impactful release every 6 weeks :)
Jonathan Barry
Louis: what happened to Q2? Lol
Jonathan Barry
Well, I'm still keeping my fingers crossed 🤞 and hoping 🙏 that when you bring out this latest update you mentioned previously, most recently that is, which I believe is supposed to be the "Live recording in DRUM view" feature -- that you'll simultaneously release my suggested feature here ("Recording Volume/EQ/Filter/FX/Automation in Timeline") 🤞 . . .
Jonathan Barry
And hopefully it's coming out real soon! Can't wait 😁
Jonathan Barry
You could have little green lines on a knob or fader with automation recorded (the way Reason does it. Maybe even a section in the timeline to adjust/draw in just the velocity of sounds.
Most importantly though, just being able to go back and redo/edit where something fades in or out or just being able to redo the way we manipulated an effect somewhere until it's just right (having them recorded into the timeline and editable).
